Denver Municipal Government

Denver is a consolidated city-county with an elected mayor, thirteen-member city council, 审计师, 和 clerk 和 recorder.  Denver city elections are on a non-partisan basis, meaning there are no official party nominees, though officials may belong to a political party.  All citywide elected officials have four-year terms, with a maximum of three terms.

Denver has a strong mayor form of government.  的 mayor can approve or veto any ordinances or 决议 approved by the council, make sure all contracts with the city are kept 和 performed, sign all bonds 和 contracts, is responsible for the city budget, 和 can appoint people to various city departments, 组织, 和佣金. 

的 thirteen-member Denver City Council is responsible for passing 和 changing all laws, 决议, 和法令, usually after a public hearing.  Eleven members are elected from constituent districts 和 two from at-large districts.  Councilman 保罗Kashmann represents 区6, which includes the University of Denver.  的 Council can override the Mayor’s veto with a nine out of thirteen-member vote, 和 the city budget must be approved 和 can be changed by simple majority vote of the council.  的y can also call for misconduct investigations of Denver’s departmental officials. 

的 University of Denver’s tie to Denver’s municipal government is crucial to supporting DU in varying ways.  的 University connects with Denver regarding permitting, community issues such as homelessness 和 sustainability, economic development, workforce development, 流动性, 和COVID-19. 的 University maintains additional interest in local issues including affordable housing, 公共安全, 基础设施, 刑事司法, 社会正义, 股本, 心理健康.
